This thesis describes a variety of studies that investigated the effects of exercise intensity, training status and nutrition on endogenous substrate storage and muscle fuel selection. Over the last few years stable isotope tracer methodology, used to determine substrate oxidation rates, has been further developed by the application of direct measurements of 13C-labelled substrate oxidation rates combined with the acetate correction factor.
